Student Centered Learning
Student centered learning focuses on the needs of students, and therefore involves a high degree of differentiation for readiness, learning styles, and interest. The teacher functions as a facilitator, while identifying and sharing with students clear learning expectations. Student progress is measured with ongoing formative assessment followed by a summative assessment.
Industrial Revolution Scenario
Students in fifth and sixth grade are studying the changes in Vermont life that occurred as a result of the influence of the Industrial Revolution. Students will research and learn about changes in family life, work life and transportation. They will then compare and contrast those changes with changes observed in their own lives that result from external influences. I will begin the unit by pre-assessing their metacognition about changes in their lives, as well as their content knowledge about the Industrial Revolution. I will also review the enduring understanding and essential questions that will guide the unit. We will review the rubric that final products will be assessed with, so that students can be thinking throughout the unit about the comparison between their lives and the lives of Vermonters during the Industrial Revolution. After lessons that demonstrate and probe thinking about the changes in family life, work life and transportation, students will select an option to show both their understanding of the content and their comparison to their own life. Students will meet with the teacher to develop a learning contract for their chosen option, to include a timeline and work plan. Students will self assess their final product upon completion, and then give their product and rubric to the teacher for assessment.

Hi Ed, no problem, we just haven't quite gotten them written yet-- but it's Friday, so don't worry, they're on the way :)
